“White Filling” or non-metal filling is called a composite restoration.

White Fillings - Tel Aviv Dentist - Dr. Meytal Salman

Composite is a tooth-coloured resin and glass mixture used to restore decayed or broken teeth. By using advanced bonding techniques, white fillings restore teeth that have become damaged as a result of tooth decay or injury. White fillings are used as a new and better alternative to amalgam (silver) fillings, which are aesthetically poor and contain mercury; which is now considered potentially toxic.

In the past, amalgam fillings were prized for their durability and strength to the extent that many overlook their poor appearance. With the advent of technology of white composites, we now have a healthier, aesthetic, more suitable alternative.

Many patients ask whether they should replace their current Amalgam/Silver fillings?

I always explain the pros and cons.

Inherent risks exist in all dental procedures, but the main concern with white fillings was their durability and potential shrinkage. However, new technology advancements are resulting in stronger, longer-lasting and lower-shrinkage white fillings.

The benefits far outweigh such problems, white fillings require much less tooth preparation; thereby being more conservative to tooth structure. This allows the dentist to restore not only tooth cavities caused by decay, but chipped, broken and worn teeth as well.

The aesthetic advantage is so good that with the right skills the restoration colour can be harmonised to your normal tooth colour to appear so natural, so it isn’t noticeable at all when you smile.
